Location Stadskantoor - City Office
The town hall of Utrecht, which we now call the City Office, stands on the site of the former parking lots of the National Railway company, dating from the days when the employees mainly came to Utrecht by car to work at the railways. Public transport now combines smartly with the bicycle and there are several large bicycle-parking garages at Utrecht Central Station with space for more than 20,000 bicycles.
The City Office was deliberately built on the so-called Jaarbeurs side of the tracks, to show that this zone is now also part of the central area of Utrecht. For years this side of the station was perceived as the back entrance, as if the city just about ended there. For many people it felt like the wrong side of the tracks. Today more than half of the built city is located on the Jaarbeurs side of the tracks. And where the church tower, in our case the Dom bell tower, normally marks the centre of the Old Town, the Municipal Office marks a second centre in a new part of the city of Utrecht.
